Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD)
Bone Mineral Densitometry is a special, low dose X-ray examination used to measure bone density.
Kingston Imaging Services (KIS) currently uses DEXA scanners to diagnose osteoporosis, estimate the risk of bone fracture, and assess the response to treatment. The examination is usually performed on the lumbar spine and hip, and is a quick, non-invasive procedure.
Bone Mineral Densitometry is by appointment and the procedure takes about 15 minutes.
- Do NOT take calcium supplements 24 hours prior to appointment
- Appointment should NOT be booked within 2 weeks of having any X-ray exams involving contrast agents or having a Nuclear Medicine appointment
- It is preferable to wear clothing that does NOT contain metal. Exam gowns are provided when needed.
