Gastrointestinal Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is a type of imaging that allows our Radiologists to view continuous X-ray images while performing your procedure. At Kingston Imaging Services (KIS), fluoroscopy is used to examine the upper digestive tract.
Type of Upper GI Tests
Barium Swallow
This procedure is used to visualize the esophagus by swallowing liquid barium while X-ray images are obtained.
Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Series
The esophagus, stomach and duodenum (first part of the small intestine) are imaged using liquid barium to reveal abnormalities.
Small Bowel Series
This procedure involves filling the small intestine with liquid barium. X-ray images are taken every 20-30 minutes over the next hour or two until the entire small bowel is opacified.
